Rainbow Snippets: Jackpot!

I've never written a short story, much less contemporary, but my publisher is doing an anthology called Love Is Proud to benefit the Orlando victims. Here is my (unedited) entry (not accepted yet, wish me luck).

The constant dinging of the slot machines gave Jack a headache. He reached in his pack for some Advil and swallowed two tablets with the last of the lukewarm coffee that sat on the table next to his phone and iPad.
“Another?” The bartender asked from behind the bar.
Jack glanced across the floor of the casino at his mother, Lydia.  “Yeah, looks we’re going to be here a while.”
“You sound thrilled.” The bartender grabbed the coffee and walked around the bar.

Rainbow Snippets ~ Need Your Love

He [Garrett] returned Eron’s toothy grin.
“What are you having?” Eron asked.
“Rum and Coke.”
“Bartender, he’ll have what I’m having. I need scotch and ginger ale with a twist of lime.
“Thanks but I don’t drink scotch. It’s too strong.”
The bartender looked at Eron who nodded. “I didn’t either until I had it with ginger. Believe me you’ll be hooked. Plus, when you go to your business meetings and order scotch, you’ll impress your clients more than with rum and Coke.”

Saturday Sentiments

If I’d shouted blue murder every time someone tried to kiss me at Eaton, I’d have gone hoarse in the mouth ~ Robert, Downton Abbey

I’ve spent the last month regrouping and reorganizing my life. I launched the new blog and retooled this one last weekend. I’ve created new routines at home, since I have to take care of all the chores myself now. Above all, I am back to writing again.

I am working on a merman romance, Sartin, here’s a working blurb:

In a world foretold by prophesies and folk tales, what’s more important, happiness or destiny?

Sartin’s amber eyes told his mother, and the rest of the pod, that he was destined to become a great Alewar from the day he was born. Mocked by the majority of the pod for his progressive practice of Decoy, Sartin’s life doesn’t feel like the life of any of the great Alewars his mother told him about. Hoping to find an Alewar mate at his twenty-third Winter Meeting, an injury and storm take Sartin far away from Winter Cove. Nursed back to health by a Land Person, Sartin finds love and acceptance. Torn between his love of Maru and his love of the sea, Sartin must choose between happiness and destiny in this tale of Sartin of the Sea.

Now that it feels like summer, what are you reading?

Romance Blog Part II

Six years ago, I embarked on my blogging journey. “If you want to be an author,” they said, “you have to blog every day and develop a platform.” So I started.

But what was I going to blog about on a daily basis? My life certainly isn’t that interesting that everyone wants to read a diarized version of activities each day.

I was new to writing and didn’t consider myself a romance writer at the time. I could have done historical based articles, but then the audience of the blog wouldn’t have matched the audience of my novels.

The one thing I did know about, the one topic I could share from my heart, was my journey to become a published author. I know about setting high goals, breaking it down into achievable chunks, and doing the work to back up the goal.

Along my own path to success (which by my definition was publication), I shared my set backs, my successes, the revision of my goals, boundaries, and Tomlin's. I even created another blog to share spotlight my writing friends work (creating that community).

But lately something hasn’t felt comfortable about the content I’ve been sharing. I dropped off the email list for a couple of blog tour sites. I’ve had my own setback of about six to seven months of not working on my blog or my own dream journey. My goal is to do both. Not only do I want to promote my own romance writing and other great authors, I also want to continue to inspire others in their dream journeys.

So the choice is clear, it’s time to split the two blogs!

This blog has been renamed dean frech ~ lgbtqia+ romance writer. My tag line remains the same, Not the history you were taught. I chose to change to the lgbtqia+ designation because, although I only have MM titles published and in the immediate queue right now, I have some ideas for FF and transgendered romance. Who knows what else my twisted brain will come up with along the way.
I am moving the motivational stuff to a new blog, called How I Did It: 5 Easy Steps to Accomplishing Your Goals and Realizing your Dreams. I will also be establishing a new Twitter account and Facebook page for folks to follow me in my journey and use the tools I do to achieve their own dreams and goals. Although not ready to go yet, you can see the blog here:

How I Did It: 5 Steps for Accomplishing Your Goals and Realizing Your Dreams

In addition to my own content and news on my own writing career, I will be joining forces with some blog tour companies to help promote my fellow authors in the LGBTQIA+ fiction arena. Currently I am hosting for IndigoMarketing. I also take direct requests for promo spot, just send me an email to deanfrech@aol.com.

Note about review policy: I don’t reviews any more. As an author myself, I don’t want to muddle what could be a fun collaborative relationship with a review of book I didn’t like. Unfortunately,I don’t have the time to read all the books I want to, let alone try to get something done in time for a release or specific promo date. As the blog grows and expands, I may host a team of reviewers, but I won’t do the reviews myself. When I read a novel, I do so because I enjoy the author, as research for my own writing, etc.

Thank you for joining me today on a new leg of my blogging journey! I hope you return regularly for the latest from me, my Rainbow Snippets on Sundays, and the latest from the lgbtquia+ fiction world.

What do you like to see most from romance author blogs? I'd love to hear!

Rainbow Snippets ~ Need Your Love

“Lovely ceremony, don’t you think?” Johnette said as they headed to the country club.
 “What’s that?” Garrett asked.
“Lovely ceremony, Susan was beautiful.”
“Yeah, lovely.”
“What’s wrong? You haven’t been yourself since we arrived at the church.”
“Nothing, I have a lot on my mind.”
I’m infatuated with a good-looking guy, but I can’t tell you or my dad that. But it doesn’t matter because he didn’t say much, anyway.

Change in Yourself

Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore ~ Dorothy, The Wizard of Oz

Once you get started on your dream journey and start accomplishing some of your smaller goals, you’ll notice a change in yourself. You’ll see the rest of your journey differently. You’ll notice that it’s not as hard as you once thought it might be. You’ll start looking at the outside world differently as well.

But beware - in my experience, just when I have things under control, I get knocked back two or three steps. What I’ve learned is that no matter how much I’ve learned and no matter how easy my routines and boundaries are to adhere to, I have to constantly remind myself all the reasons to keep going.

I’ve also learned that the best things for us (in this case, working on routines that help achieve goals in our dream journey) are sometimes the hardest to do. It’s easy to sleep in every morning and get up at the very last minute before you have to get ready for work. It can be grueling to get up two or three hours before work everyday (including weekends) to work on your dream goals. (The same can be said if you are working all day and coming home to work on dream goals).

What’s a change in yourself that you noticed right away once you started working on your dream journey?

Blog Hop for Visibility, Awareness, and Equality

Have we all stepped through the looking glass? ~ Dowager Countess, from Downton Abbey

Thinking about this topic and the long distance we’ve come over the last few years, I can’t believe I’m experiencing this in my (relative) youth. I truly believed that Thomas and I would be in our sixties or seventies lined up at the courthouse to be legally married. We were one of the first couples married in our county in Missouri here before the Supreme Court decision two years ago.

I enjoyed seeing all the pictures of the same-sex couples on social media that got to go to Prom without petitioning the school board for permission. They celebrated a right of passage along with their straight friends, I hope without the fear of being assaulted.

And yet, we still see pictures of gay couples being assaulted for public displays of affection. Just when I think we are moving forward, I see stuff like that. I don’t even want to get into the transgendered bathroom issue. I need to get the badge that says, “I will go with you” and wear it all the time.

I suppose that’s why I love writing historical books. I am so grateful that, for the most part, I’ve never had to hide in the closet. Sometimes I really have to scheme to figure out how to get the characters together in a plausible fashion that works for their times. In A Place to Call Their Own, it’s the unsettled Kansas Prairie. In Disappear With Me, it was a housekeeper’s need to get home to her family. Need Your Love is about the struggle in the 60s that two professional men have to figure out their way in the homophobic world.

So this year, let’s celebrate what we do have, that life is pretty good for most of us. Let’s continue to push for reform that makes the rest of country, and the world, a safer place to be for all of us.

Thanks for stopping by, enter the rafflecopter for 2 chancse to win a copy of both A Place to Call Their Own or Need Your Love, and stop by some of the other blogs participating this year.

Rainbow Snippets - Need Your Love

Coherent conversation stuck in his throat. The class clown, the jokester at a loss for words. He finished his cigarette, then ground his newfound frustration into the butt on the ground. “I need to go. Enjoy the rest of the day.”
Garrett nodded. “Nice to meet you.”
It was just as well. Garrett didn’t seem interested in conversation either. When Garrett failed to extend his hand, Eron offered his wanting another moment of contact. No, he wanted to push Garrett up against the wall and kiss his lips, but for now he’d settle for a handshake.
