Guess

Living is a form of not being sure, not knowing what next or how...We guess. We may be wrong, but we take leap after leap in the dark ~ Agnes de Mille

Sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith on your dream journey. When I quit smoking and went to school I had a definite plan laid out before I started. But when I started writing novels, I just starting writing.

That was a leap of faith I started five years ago. I learned not only about writing, but plotting and character development along the way. I built social networks and my blog. It's been an uphill battle.

I continue to navigate through the publishing industry.  My first novel is published and second manuscript is completed. A third manuscript is under construction. I continue to take leaps in the dark.

What's a part of your dream journey you just jumped into?

Is it possible for two Civil War veterans to find their place in the world on the Kansas Prairie?

When the War Between the States ended in 1865 many Americans emerged from the turmoil energized by their possibilities for the future. Frank Greerson and Gregory Young were no different. After battling southern rebels and preserving the Union, the two men set out to battle the Kansas Prairie and build a life together. Frank yearned for his own farm, away from his family—even at the risk of alienating them. Gregory, an only child, returned home to claim his inheritance to help finance their adventure out west.

Between the difficult work of establishing a farm on the unforgiving Kansas prairie, and the additional obstacles provided by the weather, Native Americans and wild animals, will their love and loyalty be enough to sustain them through the hardships?

Not a Destination

Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome ~ Arthur Ashe

Was last week a full moon week or what? Even worse, it was a blue moon!  No, the moon wasn't blue in color (on Wednesday night it was a eery reddish orange from my view in the Midwest).

It was a seasonal blue moon, but a crazy time none the less. Work was crazy busy and just plain crazy this week. I had a horrible personal schedule in the mornings this week and people's moods were just plain nuts.

But the good thing about the week was finding a new plot point for a future work. Would you read a story about someone who messed up in one blue moon and then worked at fixing everything that climaxes at the next?

What Did It Feel Like?

You write the first draft with your heart. You re-write with your head ~ Finding Forrester

Are there any "older" movies out there that you always meant to watch but just haven't gotten around to the them? When you did, were you ever like, How come I haven't seen that yet?

Finding Forrester is one of those for me. I remember getting the DVD from Netflix but I don't remember why I never sat down and watched it all the way through. Last night I finally got to it. Maybe if I would have seen it in 2000 it came out I would have started writing sooner?  There's a reason for everything.

I started bawling when Jamal asks William "How did it feel to write those books?" Well, Jamal, let me tell you it's pretty wonderful. It's like asking someone in Direct Sales, how did it feel when you first became a Director or small business owner, how did if feel when you made your first profit.  The feeling is nearly indescribable. (And for the record, yes, I bawled throughout the rest of the movie, when he's vindicated and at the very end.)

And it's that feeling that keeps me going. I've started my third novel and it's going great. I continue to trudge through the daily task of writing and editing. Now I have the extra pressure to have something ready for my critique group each week. Just that goal keeps me going each week.

What did it feel like the first time you achieved a goal?

Be Daring, Be Different

Be daring, be different, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers ~ Cecil Beaton

Even thought I don't have kids, I love back to school. It's another "New Year" for me and a chance to get focused on goals for the rest of the year.  The warm summer weather and other activities can be distracting, so the back to school activities seem to help get me focused.

What are you doing to be daring for this last part of the year?

Correct Your Mind

When you correct your mind, everything else will fall into place ~ Lao Tzu

Even as you start to achieve milestone goals, negative thoughts can still creep into your dream journey. Like the quote says, I've found that correcting my mind always helps me move forward.

I've been working hard at positive self talk for along time, over twenty years. I still have my moments of insecurity and negativity that requires me to refocus. What helps me is to peel away the negative comments and tones to try to understand the intended message.  That can be hard and frustrating sometimes, but it's easier to move forward.

Listen for the intended message, tune out negative and extraneous comments, and I'm sure you'll be able to learn from the message.

How do you tune out negativity?

Don't Take it Too Seriously

Don't take it or yourself too seriously--it's just life. You're allowed to make mistakes, screw things up and fall down (which everyone does and always will). Be kind to yourself in this process. Remember your intentions (those states of being and your authentic desires) are what you're truly after, not the specific outcomes or actions ~ Mike Robbins

I post a lot about developing routines and boundaries and sticking to those routines. Routines are how I get things done; boundaries keep me from ignoring the other parts of my life.

None of it matters if you're aren't having fun. The whole point of my dream journey is to possibly change careers to do something more enjoyable from home. But if it's not fun building the business, then it's not going to be enjoyable when you're able to quit working a full time job.

Some may argue that it will be better once you are doing it full-time, but think about it.  If something is bothering you when you're only doing it part-time, imagine the bother when you do it full time?

In my experience, not all stress or "not having fun" times are bad. You need those along the way to appreciate the good the times.  Just don't take things too seriously when you hit those bumps. For me that usually means it is time to slow for just a bit.

What do you do when things aren't fun anymore?

Every Day is an Opportunity

Every day is an opportunity to learn something or discover something or someplace. Be curious, play, go out on a limb, walk a different way to work, try a new food at dinner and keep learning and growing ~ Sandra Magsamen

I recently learned another tip about writing in POV and did it ever make sense.  I continue to learn more about the craft of writing with two complete manuscripts under my belt, one of which is published.

No matter what level you get to in your dream journey, I can imagine there are always new things to learn.  You just have to be open to try new things, experience new things. I will be the first to tell you I can be stuck in the methods that work for me. More recently I can also tell you that the new things I've tried have been beneficial for my writing.

What new tip or trick have you tried on your dream journey today?

P.S. Happy Birthday, Mom!

DISAPPEAR WITH ME

It is done! I have sent Disappear With Me to my editors and anxiously awaiting a decision.  It took me four and a half years to get A Place to Call Their Own ready for this point and I did Disappear With Me in about fifteen months.  I feel like I'm getting better at this.

Here is a blurb about Disappear With Me:

In 1910, the United Kingdom was in turmoil.  King Edward died after only nine years on the throne.  The social class system that upheld British society for centuries was being chipped away by social, political, and economic unrest across the Commonwealth. Amidst this backdrop, Reverend Leander Normal is accused of sodomy.  After discovering his own self-worth and the meaning of unconditional love, Leander finds the courage to stand up for what he believes is right and pleads not guilty to the charges. Throughout the trial,  Leander’s past is revealed, including the temptations that bring the accusations against him. By the end of the trail, Leander is once again reunited with a romantic interest from the past. It may be too late to rekindle any love that might remain, given the circumstances of the era and Leander’s likely sentence. Love is greater than hope or faith, but can Leander convince a jury that the love he shares with another man is natural?

Your Own Energy

The first thing to realize is that you are in control of your own energy. You can begin to use basic energy--the kind that comes from food, air, loving relationships, nature's beauty and the flow of creativity--for your own good. All these sources of energy are available to you all the time.d They are a part of your birthright; they connect you to the flow of life, which is constantly renewing itself ~ Deepak Chopra

There are days when I cannot count on any else's energy but my own. As a matter of fact, I've just had a couple of weeks of relying on my own energy to move forward on my next project. Just when it seems like things should be getting easier with writing, it just gets tougher and tougher.

Sometimes the only energy I can muster is to sit down and get started on the task and just do it.  The simple act of doing helps me do more. It's one of the easiest lessons I've learned about this endeavor.

I hope you can gleam the same wisdom as it applies to your dream journey.  Just do it and you will find the energy you need to continue.

Where do you find energy?

Do-Overs

You can have a do-over starting today. But you have to get over the feeling that it's too late ~ Jean Chatzky

Yesterday, many of the school districts in the Kansas City area went back to school.  Man that's early! Even when I was in school we didn't go back until the third or fourth full week of August.

I've posted before about what the month of August means to me, a renewal of sorts. Because my dad was a teacher, August always felt like the New Year in our house. And it still feels that way sometimes.

There are still four and a half months left of the New Year, there's plenty of time to get started, if not completed, goals or resolutions set back in January.  I am diligently working on two myself and renewed by the August/Back to School itch.

Are you feeling a do-over coming on for the end of 2013?

Bouncing Back Buoyantly

What was one of the easiest, yet most powerful, strategies for bouncing back buoyantly from adversity? Remembering the mantra, "I must watch the words I use--because they create the world I see!" ~ Karen Salmansohn

Even when things are going well and your dream journey is progressing there can be set backs.  My biggest setback right now is just the time to work on new projects. Energized by the publication of my first novel and the excitement of finishing a second manuscript and starting a third project, I just don't have enough time in my day to work on projects like I want to.

That's as negative as I get these days. It's taken years of practice and adjustment to get to this point. You have to practice not thinking negative.  Even when a negative thought creeps in, you have immediately fix it and fixate on the positive thought that counteracts it.

How do you keep positive on your dream journey?

This is the Day

This is a day to separate what does work for you from what is no longer needed. Time to toss out old regrets, useless feelings or past resentments ~ Ed and Deb Shapiro

No matter what your dream journey, there will always be advice from those who have gone before you that say you need to this and you need to that to be successful.  As a writer I am told that I need to blog everyday to build my platform.

But that doesn't work for me.  For years I struggled with not only coming up with a topic to post about and also guilt when I didn't get a post published. Then there were days when I got a blog post done, but no writing in the novel. Crazy!

I finally came to terms with the fact that I am too busy to write a blog post every day of the week. Even when I tried to write more than one post a day for the future dates, those posts quickly dwindled out.

I did figure out I could post four days a week. One on Saturday and Sunday and two during the week.  I struggled for just a bit that I this wasn't every day, but it was a schedule I could work with. Every since I figured out, posting regularly on my blog has not been a problem.

So my advice is this:  it's your dream journey and you are the one that has to take the steps to reach your goals. Even if another expert in your field is telling you to do something, and it doesn't work for you, modify the advice to fit your schedule and your dream. It might take you longer, but it also might make the dream journey much more enjoyable!

What is a routine in your dream journey you modify to fit your schedule?

Each Day is a Wonder

What I know for sure is that every sunrise is like a new page, a chance to right ourselves and receive each day in all its glory. Each day is a wonder ~ Oprah Winfrey

Do you have your routines in place?  The best combat I have against avoiding working on your dream journey is to schedule it in your life. Once I started scheduling it, I knew I had that time available to work and gradually I became excited to work on writing in the mornings.

Now I use the word scheduling loosely.  For me, it simply means after I get up and workout, writing is the next agenda for my day.  I generally have a word count goal or an editing goal and then I'm off to the next portion of my day.

Sometimes, those, I do schedule tasks according to my morning schedule.  I work a job from 1 pm to 9 pm, so that's when I get most of my writing done.  With that work schedule, that also means I have to use that morning time for different appointments. When I have those appointments, I do schedule my week so that I accomplish everything I need to.

Do you schedule your work or just try to fit it in?

Don't Stop at the Beginning

When it comes to exploring your creative side, it's very easy to think of all the reasons you can't do it--you don't have the time, you don't have the money, etc.--but if you are truly passionate about expressing yourself, you can find a way. When you feel as though you can't do something, the simple antidote is action: Begin doing it. Start the process, even if it's just a simple step, and don't stop at the beginning. Take the next step and the next until what you've dreamed about becomes a reality ~ Marcus Buckingham

When I decided I was going to write a novel, I just sat down and started writing.  I had my characters in mind and I knew generally what the plot would be about (the beginning, the majority of the novel, and how it would end). I had not studied the fiction writing process, I had not studied the world of publishing.  That was 2008 and how times have changed in just five years!

But I had passion and that was to write my story.  Along the way, I learned how to craft my story into an appealing work of fiction.  I also learned (through research and the hard way, LOL) about the world of publishing and changes taking place within it. I didn't stop at the beginning and kept going. It took me four years to complete the first draft and another year to see it published, but it's done.

My advice if you want to do something is just start doing it knowing what you do know. Anything you need to learn can be picked up along the way.

When you jump into a new task or goal, do you jump in and do it or do you research before you start?

It's Not Forever

Build on your past successes, be grateful for what you have, and know that this, too, shall pass. It's only for the now. Whatever we're facing, it's not forever ~ Dave Pelzer

Can you believe it's August already?  Where has the time gone?

I love the month of August.  This time of year (August, September) is like a renewal for me.  I've started new jobs, new careers, and some milestone moments in my life during this time.

When I was growing up, my dad was a teacher, so this time of year really did feel more like new year for all of us, more than January ever did.  Now, when August rolls around, I get energized because I know that the end of year is right around the corner.

I set out to complete three goals this year:

1. Get #APTCTO published.
2. Prepare Disappear With Me for submission.
3. Complete the first draft of The Higher Law.

So far I have accomplished 1, and nearly done with 2.  I have gotten started on The Higher Law, but only about ten percent done.

So, as August rolls around this year, I am ready to get this third manuscript written.

How is your year going?  What are your plans for the last five months of the year?
