Muscular and Spiritual Energy

There’s a muscular energy in sunlight corresponding to the spiritual energy of the wind ~ Annie Dillard

Once you get your routines figured out, you might find them easy to adhere because they work so well for you.

My routines work for me because I truly am a morning person. I get up, ride my exercise bike, and then sit down at the computer for at least an hour before work each day. We are usually in bed by 9pm each night and I am up by 5 every day. This also helps me maintain a consistent sleep schedule.

Boundaries also work well for me, when it comes to writing. It’s hard for me to be creative after a full day of work, so I rarely work on creative, first draft writing in the evenings. I might work on editing if I have a novel coming out, but that is a bit different.

I’m not so good at setting boundaries with my NSEDJ, but I’m getting better at that as well.

I’d love to hear about how your routines and boundaries work well for your dream journey.

A Lump in the Throat

A poem begins with a lump in the throat ~ Robert Frost

Your dream journey usually also starts as a lump in the throat or an itch that one can’t shake. It’s an idea so that so ingrained in your being, it’s probably always been there.

For me, once I settled into my writing routines, I found writing a natural extension of myself. Getting up early in the morning, working for an hour before going to work, makes my day go much better. I much more relaxed, calm, and serene during the day when I get up, excercise, then write for at least an hour.

Working on my dream goal is a regular par of my day as eating or sleeping. When I don’t make the time to get up and work on my projects, my day seems lacking.

Tell me about a part of your dream journey that was easy for you.

The Answers are Within

Take full account of the excellencies which you possess, and in gratitude remember how you would hanker after them, if you had them not ~ Marcus Aurelius

After you discover your dream journey, there might be a time of hesitation before you actually get started. If you’re already in the chosen field of your dream goal, this just might mean that you stall progress. For those who haven’t begun…well we all know what that means.

If you’re in that position, don’t despair. Fear of the unknown is natural. Remember this: you have the answers deep inside.

Yes, you read that right, each of us has the answers inside ourselves for the questions we seek.

When I started writing, I had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t even know the ending to the story at that point. I had the words in my head and I started typing them out on the blank page on the computer. Inside though, I knew I was going in the right direction.

I did seek out help through books and feedback from others, so the story that is published today is not the rough draft I first produced. I didn’t know everything I needed to know (do you ever?), but I had a gut feeling on where to start and how to progress.

You have the answers deep inside. Take a moment to listen and see what you find out.

I’d love to hear about a time when you figured out your own answers in your dream journey.

Rainbow Snippets - A Place to Call Their Own

The War Between the States was over. Frank had fought on the Union side, but there was one more fight to win before he could go west. As Gregory Young stood up, he glanced across the table at Frank. He nodded to indicate it was all right for Gregory to leave the room with everybody else. Frank had to fight this battle on his own.
Frank’s father, Paul, took a deep breath before he spoke. “Son, I know I can’t stop you from leaving, but I am going to do everything in my power to talk you out of this.”

Disappear With Me has a new home!

I am excited to announce that I've found a new home for Disappear With Me. It will be re-released in August by JMS Books, my current publisher.

In case you missed it, here's what Disappear With Me is about:

Love is greater than hope or faith, but can Reverend Leander Norris convince a jury that the love he shares with another man is natural?

In 1910, the United Kingdom was in turmoil. King Edward died after only nine years on the throne. The social class system that upheld British society for centuries was being chipped away by social, political, and economic unrest across the Commonwealth. Amidst this backdrop, Reverend Leander Norris is accused of sodomy. After discovering his own self-worth and unconditional love, Leander finds the courage to stand up for what he believes is right and pleads not guilty to the charges. Throughout the trial, Leander’s past is revealed, including the temptations that bring the accusations against him. By the end of the trail, Leander is once again reunited with a romantic interest from the past, but it may be too late to rekindle any love that might remain, given the circumstances of the era and Leander’s likely sentence.

Out for a Walk

I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in ~ John Muir

Have you ever “craved” the chance to sit down and work on your favorite activity? Whether that is reading a book, watching a new movie that is out, or just have the weekend to be off work?

Establishing routines and working them consistently can cause the same good feelings about working on your dream journey. There are times when I am ready for bed, just so I can get up and working on my writing in the morning. There have been jobs in the past where I literally hit the floor excited for Monday and to sell after the weekend.

We are about a third through the year. Now is a good time review your resolutions. Have you started on them? If so, good for you! Is it because you’ve developed routines that work for you in your life right now?

If you haven’t started, is it because you haven’t worked out your routines? I will admit sometimes it is tough and always a work in progress for me. But I’m getting back into it. Slowly, but surely, I am back to getting up early and working on writing, editing, and other tasks like writing blog posts.

I’d love to hear how you’re doing with your routines this year!

Good Actions

Good actions give strength to ourselves and inspire good actions in others ~ Plato

When we moved to Kansas City on December 31, 2009, I made sure we went to church on that first Sunday. For a couple of years I had found Central Presbyterian Church  and knew they were an open and welcoming congregation. I had not been happy with our church where we lived before and was excited to return to my Presbyterian roots. .

That winter in Kansas City was snowy and cold. On that first Sunday morning, it snowed another four inches Saturday night into Sunday. (Later I found out that in ten years, the pastor had never canceled church!) I called the church office, and the message did not indicate that church would be closed, so we made the trek through the city to church that Sunday morning. I’ll never forget that first Sunday with our new church family. I knew that day that we had our found our new church home in Kansas City.

Later that month when we invited the pastor over for coffee, she told us that she was inspired by our story. Determined to start the New Year in a new city right, we traveled to church in the snow. Not only was it good for ourselves, but we inspired others that year.

I think it’s the same when you’re working on accomplishing a dream. In the beginning, the people in your life can act put off or hurt that you might be spending more time on your goals. But after just a little bit of success, soon they return to your corner, cheering you on. Then, as a result of your actions, you inspire them to reach for their own goals.

I’d love to hear about a time when you inspired others to act!

Rainbow Snippets: Need Your Love

Eron looked over his shoulder. A nice looking man about his age walked into the sanctuary. Eron relished the tanned face, bordered by neatly combed blond hair. An outdoor type, no doubt. A long time had passed since he concerned himself with a man’s build and how well he filled out a suit. Apparently uncomfortable, the tanned blond surveyed the room. He escorted a young-looking brunette, and an older man, presumably his father, to seats on the bride’s side of the church.

My $35K List

Good habits, once established, are just as hard to break as are bad habits ~ Robert Puller

I recently read in Mary Kay Ash’s 1994 autobiography Miracles Happen about her $35K list. This is a list of the top 6 things you’d like to accomplish each day. This comes from a story in the book where a consultant suggested executives of a company pay them what this idea was worth and that ended up being $35,000.

A couple of weeks ago, I created my $35K list for writing. Then I created a grid that I can print out each week and check off my list each day.

If you follow me, you might be ask, why my topic for today returns to the basic of establishing routines. I have fallen out of my routines for the last three months or so. In short, after being sick over the holidays and responsibilities at the NSEDJ (not so evil day job), I just needed the extra rest and have neglected progress on my writing.

That’s the thing about most dream journeys. In my case, I was able to take a break and it worked for me. Now, if I depended on royalties for my income, this break might have been a different story. At this point in my life, all is well.

The other interesting note for me on this exercise is that my $35K list isn’t anything I didn’t already know I needed to be doing. All six routines: writing, blogging, promo, obtaining reviews, obtaining guest post spots, and working with my critique groups are activities I always did anyway. I didn’t always do them every day.

Once again, the answers were inside of me. I needed to get back to the place where I could focus on my writing routines and the 35K helped me get going again.

Have you had a time when you restarted along your dream journey by going back to the basics? I’d love to hear!

Taking Responsibility

Here’s to the power of taking responsibility ~ Jill Badonsky

If you follow me, you understand how much I try to pass along that everyone owns their goals, their own outcomes. Lately, this concept of having the answer for my life inside myself has come to light.

You might have noticed I’ve been a bit quite since about the middle of December. Lots has been happening. My third novel was released the beginning of December, then I got real sick. I know, I know…I probably caused the severity of it by not going to the doctor sooner, but lesson learned.

Then, of course, the holidays became my excuse for not writing or sharing on the blog. In January, responsibilities at the day job, as well as illness, overwhelmed me.

The last couple of weeks, my responsibility in all of this has become more apparent to me. I know that I am in control of destiny, attaining my vision to be a full-time writer. This week, I am taking the first of many baby steps to get back into the same routines that have helped me achieve my goals in the past. For me this also means setting some boundaries (even though I’d like to write Saturday’s and Sunday’s blog post this day, I need to stop for the night and relax) and also reaching out to some friends for support.

I have the answers and only I can take responsibility for my dreams and goals!

Have you had a recent revelation about responsibility along your dream journey? I’d love to hear!
